  • Come Learn with Us: Haiti Webinar

    On 8 November 2023 JCoR hosted a webinar on Haiti featuring Nixon Boumba. The content of this educational session covered the historical context of Haiti and illuminated how it informs Haiti’s ongoing struggle to secure a just and peaceful democracy. Nixon Boumba is a social justice activist who uses the human right framework to achieve social change in Haiti. For the last two decades, Boumba has devoted himself to being an organizer and a part of the student movement, the paysans movement, women and feminist movements, and the movement to access basic services in the slum areas particularly in Port-au-Prince. Since the earthquake, Boumba worked with mining organizers, the land rights and reform movement, the anti-corruption movement, and the movement around the mega-project in the country. For the last 6 years, Boumba has worked as a capacity-builder for the LGBTI movement. Boumba has a Bachelor’s in Sociology and is doing a Master’s degree in history at the state University in…

    JCoR Workshop for Religious in Zimbabwe

    JCoR-Zimbabwe is offering a peacebuilding workshop from 29 June to 1 July 2023 in Mutare. This workshop will be a gathering to follow-up on the JCoR-CMRS workshop held last October in Gweru, and it will focus on Sustainable Development Goal 16: peace, justice, and strong institutions. It will also be an opportunity to organize ourselves to support healthy participation of Zimbabweans in our upcoming national elections, to contribute to the maintenance of a peaceful environment in our localities throughout the process, and to prepare those who are interested to assist in election monitoring. We aim to have each member congregation of CMRS represented among the participants.

  • JCoR Virtual Meeting for All Sub-Regions of Latin America and the Caribbean

    To transition from a year full of workshops throughout many sub-regions of Latin America (Andean-Amazonian, Caribbean, Southern Cone, and Mesoamerica), JCoR convened a virtual meeting for the whole continent at the beginning of December 2022. This gathering featured an exchange of updates on work undertaken in each sub-region towards campaigns themes that were selected during the year’s previously-held workshops. JCoR’s leaders in Latin America also shared a series of short videos highlighting key issues of justice currently concerning the region (deforestation, extreme poverty, inflation, migration).   • Joint Environmental Action: Tree Planting in Zimbabwe

    At a workshop convened by JCoR and the Justice and Peace Desk of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Zimbabwe (JPIC Zim) in October, a JCoR/JPIC-Zimbabwe network was formed for the purpose of facilitating joint responses from many Catholic congregations to various justice-related concerns in the country. At a team-building gathering of the network’s leadership group in November, the group elected to begin their collaboration with an effort to respond to deforestation in Zimbabwe through a tree-planting campaign that was launched on Zimbabwe’s National Tree Planting Day. This national initiative is celebrated each year on the first Saturday of December, because that is typically the point in the country’s rainy season when soil is primed for seedlings to take root successfully. A large number of tree seedlings were acquired and distributed for this campaign by the Dominican Sisters of Peace and Claretian Missionaries, who are coordinating JCoR’s activities in…

    A three-week, online workshop for Catholic Sisters, Brothers, and priests offered by the Justice Coalition of Religious (JCoR) in partnership with the Association of Religious in Uganda (ARU/AMSRIU) All Catholic Sisters, Brothers, and priests who are living and serving in Uganda are invited to participate in this workshop on advocacy for justice and peace as an essential component of the Religious vocation. The programme will offer practical guidance on how to bring the needs and voices of the people you serve from the margins of society into national and global policy conversations.     JCoR offered a three-session online workshop as a way of introduction to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and VNR process in a year when the government of Zimbabwe reported for the second time. The workshop series: offered essential background information on the SDG monitoring and review process,  accompanied participants in reflection on and articulating a response to the SDG progress reports that have been produced by their government and national civil society networks, and facilitated a post-HLPF discussion about how they/their congregations might become more engaged with SDG monitoring between now and future HLPFs.
