Kandhamal Memorial: Defending Freedom and Religious Minority Rights

We, together with the Survivors of Kandhamal Association, priests and nuns working in Odisha, the Justice Coalition of Religious North & East India (JCoR), invite you to show solidarity for those who have been targeted for their faith. Since 2009 by the call of the National Solidarity Forum (a consortium of civil society groups) and with the survivors of Kandhamal, the other parts of our country have been organizing every year, August 25 as “Kandhamal Memorial Day”.

Through this platform, prominent leaders of India, academicians and activists and religious groups who have visited Kandhamal to show solidarity in different times, are now continuing to share their concern for the common cause. Many international organizations have also extended their solidarity with the survivors of Kandhamal violence, one of the worst incidents of Christian persecution in Indian history in 2008.

This year, we have decided to observe the day on August 30, 2021 with the topic “Defending Freedom and Religious Minority Rights”. We remember to support the demands of the victims and survivors struggling for justice in Kandhamal, reclaiming peace, harmony these 13 years.

The purpose of this virtual international webinar is to understand the violations against the freedom of religious minorities in the Indian context and to develop a deeper and critical understanding of the issues and policies connected to it. This will provide a forum to share and learn the struggle for justice of those who have been targeted for their faiths; and join hands to build peace, justice and harmony in the world. Further, it will promote and strengthen the collaboration, partnership and network at the local, national, regional and global levels.

May this video conference help us to build international bonds and translate the struggle for justice into action.
