15 March 2024, 2:30PM-4:00PM (New York time)
Virtual event held via Zoom

Sponsors: Loretto at the UN and the Loretto Feminist Network

There is much to be learned across generations about how strategies to organize and create change have evolved. Just as frontier living shaped the lives of our early sisters, so a global society shapes ours. The need to broaden our vision and adjust our lifestyle and mission to a new millennium calls us to
responsible change. (I am the Way, p. 3)

This event will feature a booklet entitled Women of Spirit, Courage and Action: A collection of stories. It is a collection of stories that celebrate women across generations who have worked for justice and acted for peace. Issues highlighted include non-violence, community, climate change, indigenous rights and the land. These stories have been collected and assembled by the Loretto Feminist Network (LFN), an informal network existing within the Loretto Community for over 40 years. Our intergenerational panel will include the book’s editor, the coordinator of Justice Coalition of Religious (JCoR), and others who are representing the issues addressed. Respondents to the panel will be high-school students and teachers who are using this inspirational educational tool.

16 March 2024, 10:30AM-12:00PM (New York time)

Virtual event held via Zoom

Sponsors: Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and Trinity Washington University

Considering the intersectionality of social issues, this event will center on poverty from a human rights perspective. It will explore how sectors such as health and the environment play into the poverty conversation. It will aid in informing how the identity of women historically from marginalized groups disproportionately places many at a higher risk. Through published findings and first-hand experiences from Trinity students and the sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, this event will, on the one hand, aid in understanding the concept of the feminization of poverty and its impacts on multigenerational poverty in North America and Africa. On the other hand, the event will demonstrate that a woman is not poor and cannot be kept that way. She is full of richness and a women needs to become aware of this richness to fight against and escape poverty. Hence, there is a need to set education and awareness-raising programs for women, enabling them to discover their potential and allowing them to emerge in every positive aspect of life.
