    JCoR SDG Lab at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

    The annual High Level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place from 8-17 July this year. It functions as the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each year, the forum focuses on a select few SDGs, and government leaders voluntarily report on their national progress toward achievement of these SDGs. The SDGs of focus this year are 1, 2, 13, 16, and 17. In addition to reports from governments, the HLPF also includes events sponsored by civil society groups, to highlight their perspectives on implementation and progress toward the SDGs in their respective countries. JCoR will join the conversation by offering a series of virtual discussion, which we are calling the “JCoR SDG Lab.” This series will showcase Catholic Religious and their partners’ perspectives on progress and good practices towards sustainable development.   • JCoR Virtual Meeting for All Sub-Regions of Latin America and the Caribbean

    To transition from a year full of workshops throughout many sub-regions of Latin America (Andean-Amazonian, Caribbean, Southern Cone, and Mesoamerica), JCoR convened a virtual meeting for the whole continent at the beginning of December 2022. This gathering featured an exchange of updates on work undertaken in each sub-region towards campaigns themes that were selected during the year’s previously-held workshops. JCoR’s leaders in Latin America also shared a series of short videos highlighting key issues of justice currently concerning the region (deforestation, extreme poverty, inflation, migration).   • Joint Action for Environmental Justice: Tree Planting in Zimbabwe (December 2022)

    At a workshop convened by JCoR and the Justice and Peace Desk of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors of Zimbabwe (JPIC Zim) in October, a JCoR/JPIC-Zimbabwe network was formed for the purpose of facilitating joint responses from many Catholic congregations to various justice-related concerns in the country. At a team-building gathering of the network’s leadership group in November, the group elected to begin their collaboration with an effort to respond to deforestation in Zimbabwe through a tree-planting campaign that was launched on Zimbabwe’s National Tree Planting Day. This national initiative is celebrated each year on the first Saturday of December, because that is typically the point in the country’s rainy season when soil is primed for seedlings to take root successfully. A large number of tree seedlings were acquired and distributed for this campaign by the Dominican Sisters of Peace and Claretian Missionaries, who are coordinating JCoR’s activities in…

    From 6 to 18 November 2022, the governments who are parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will convene in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt for the conference widely known as “COP27.” Sharm el-Sheikh sits on the Sinai Peninsula, the land held sacred by followers of Abrahamic religions as the place where God appeared to Moses and called him to a mission of liberation. On each day of this conference, you are invited to pray in solidarity with the whole Earth community and, in a special way, with the Catholic Sisters, Brothers, priests, and other faith leaders who will be advocating for environmental justice in the UN proceedings on the Sinai Peninsula.   • My Voice, Our Equal Future: Girls Speak to Climate Change

    This event joins the themes of International Day of the Girl 2021 and CSW66. It provides space for a global conversation among girls, who will discuss their contributions to climate justice, the obstacles they see and their hopes for the future. In Our Common Agenda, António Guterres mentions youth 39 times. He writes, “Listen to and work with youth”. This event seeks to do just that – especially with girls.
