Event on the margins of the 2021 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development
REDES and Justice Coaliton of Religious (JCoR) organized a side event within the official program of theUN High Level Political Forum(HLPF). From July 6 to 15, this Forum is the global event in which the international community reviews the progress of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
REDES was born out of the interest of various congregations to join forces to show a common voice, in solidarity with the discarded majorities: A network that is a recognizable benchmark in political advocacy in cooperation and education for development, giving a voice to those sister people who are not heard .
This approach has been reinforced by both Laudato Si ‘and the recent encyclical Fratelli Tutti, which reflects extensively on social and political charity . The fragility of world systems in the face of pandemics has shown that not everything is resolved with free markets and that, in addition to rehabilitating a sound policy that is not subject to the dictates of finance, “we have to bring human dignity back to life to the center and that the alternative social structures that we need are built on that pillar. (Fratelli Tutti 168)
Congregations, especially those represented in REDES and JCoR, feel the call to seek alliances and structures oriented to the Common Good. We are aware that in this change of era, faced with the threat of the eco-social crisis, we must redouble our work towards our ends, sharing the aspirations and the path with the multitude of entities that share them, from any other secular or religious inspiration. We thus welcome with hope the framework of the 2030 Agenda as a tool to take the necessary concrete steps.
On July 12, 1:30 p.m. (Spanish time) we will celebrate an inspiring meeting in which we will share some examples of good practices promoted by religious congregations that contribute directly to the achievement of the SDGs that are subject to review in 2021 in the HLPF. This meeting will begin with messages from MA Moratinos, High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), AR Amayuelas, representative of the civil society alliance Futuro en Común and Sr. A. Smerilli, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development from the Vatican.
